The west gallery

The third great gift from Hans Nielsen Tausan, this time with his second wife, is the west gallery dating from 1682, now the place for the organ. In beautiful arced squares are painted pictures of the eleven apostles plus St Paul. (Judas was not shown with the apostles). Three of the squares were missing when the north gallery was erected in the 1840’s. The artist, Niels Nielsen, was the same person who painted the epitafium.

Almost all of the apostles suffered death by martyrdom and the artist has inserted the martyr symbol for each of them, like the St. Andrew’s cross. Above is the name of each apostle and below the Scripture (tranlated): «Not us, not us Lord, but your name give glory.» This Scripture also indicates the purpose for the gifts.
