The words stately and beautiful are almost inadequate when trying to describe the west wall. With its hight, arched portal and three large arched windows, it rivals the lines of a fine cathedral. High at the top of the west wall, you will see a round window. Although, the church is constructed of stone; it is detailed at the corners, portals, and large windows with finely cut marble stones. These walls are 1.8 meter thick but note that the sidewalls of the chancel are somewhat narrower.
As can only be imagined, the labor used for building this church must have been tremendous. Although we do not know, it is probably safe to assume that it took many years to complete construction of the church. The skill of the builders and finishing workers cannot be questioned. The stone walls are still as even and fine, the corners just as straight today as they were eight hundred years ago. For this reason, the Tingvoll Church remains a rare treasure of Norway.
