The 800+ year old church in Tingvoll and the large angular farmhouse beside it, lie on a beautiful spot on the north side of the Tingvoll fjord.
In the old times, Tingvoll was a court place for Nordmore Fylke. This is where the pagan temple was located, adorned with pictures and statues of Nordic gods. The temple was supposedly burned by Olav Trygvason, along with the pagan temple at Lade; this is what we are told by the historian Snorre. Below the church, layers of ash indicate that, indeed, a fire occurred on this site. Around 1000 a stave church was probably built on this site which stood until Gunnar «made this house».
