At some time, these beautiful paintings received an ugly treatment. This may have happened in 1837, when the weapon-house was taken down and rebuilt. <br><br>During the reconstruction, notches were cut into the logs with an axe to allow the walls to receive a roughcast of clay mixed with straw.
