Corridors inside the walls

The picture is taken from the south wall of the nave. It’s a mystery that the corridors inside the walls, both on the south side and on the north side do not run horizontal but in steep stairs up to the crown of the wall under the rafters and then down again with the same steep pitch. The corridors must, therefore, have been unsuitable for walks between the lectory in the chancel arc and the niches in the west wall.

An opening in the wall, under the organ gallery, is a far easier lead to the corridor in the west wall and all the way to the arced window. Gunnar’s purpose with the wall corridors is an unsolved mystery. The same is true of the outside balcony under the gable, located above the chancel.
