Evangelist sculpture

Another item dating back to Catholic times, is the evangelist now standing on the foremost chairs in the nave. At the restoration, this figure was equipped with a key, in the belief that it was Peter. In times past a Madonna and an evangelist were attached – back to back – to sticks which were carried in front of religious processions. As late as the 1770’s, the two procession sticks were placed on each side of the chancel door.
