This picture is of Hans Nielsen Tausan, who three hundred years ago completed the interior of the Tingvoll church. Today it remains much as it was then. Tausan was known for his knowledge, ranging from astronomy to practical initiatives such as obtaining salt from sea water, preparation of hides, producing bricks, and gardening – he was a great farmer. When he died, he had a livestock of 150 animals. In the picture he points to a human skull with the words Ecce Homo (see that man – he becomes dust).
Although he points to the skull, his thumbs are pointing upwards to the Bible with the words Sursum Corus (rejoice in belief of God’s promises). A poet put it like this once: «Man, remember you are dust! Man remember you are more than dust!»
