The most generous donor in the 17th century was Hans Nielsen Tausan, minister to Tingvoll for forty-seven years. In 1660, he and his first wife donated the large altarpiece, carved by an artist from Trondelag. The center pictures were painted by a Dutch artist. The largest picture depicts Christ on the cross and below that is a representation of the mourning of Jesus’ dead body. Directly above the cross is the Resurrection and immediately above that, the Ascension.
The altarpiece has, all together, about thirty carved statues. The largest statues represent Moses with the Ten Commandments and St. John the Baptist with the Lamb (the Gospel). Below the four evangelists, and located throughout are symbols of faith and hope, the cross and the anchor.
